US oncologists still not satisfied — they want more weapons against NSCLC

US oncologists remain unsatisfied with the treatment of NSCLC. Physicians want more treatment options, more weapons for different patient populations, more research on managing comorbidities, and more tools to predict treatment response.

Non-small cell lung cancer -

The Cancer Research Institute (CRI) and Regeneron, together with the Harris Poll, conducted a survey of 250 oncologists who treat non-small cell lung cancer. The results show that medicine still has substantial unmet needs in NSCLC. About 30% said advanced NSCLC needs more immunotherapies, while only 17% of physicians considered existing treatment options outstanding.

Roughly 88% of physicians said more research is needed for advanced NSCLC patients with comorbidities. About 45% of these patients have hypertension or lung disease, and around two-thirds of respondents also said there are not enough weapons against patients' cardiovascular disease.

Treatment options for patients in poor health?

Physicians also said more resources are needed for patients with brain metastases, people of color, and elderly patients over 70. Chemotherapy remains part of the treatment regimen for advanced NSCLC, but patients in poorer health need gentler drugs, fewer drugs, or a switch to radiotherapy.

Regeneron looking for a market gap

NSCLC is a development focus for Regeneron. Beyond CSCC, its PD-1 inhibitor Libtayo is now pushing into NSCLC, and the company is also evaluating its EGFRxCD28 bispecific antibody in EGFR-mutated NSCLC.
